Land Snails of Bardenas Reales

Bardenas Reales is a Natural Park located in Navarra (northern Iberian Peninsula), which was declared Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2000. Characterized by amazing natural landscapes, Bardenas is a region with high biological diversity. With at least 20 species, land snails are an important group within the fauna of Bardenas. Besides, as in many places in the Iberian Peninsula, some land snail species have a big gastronomically interest, being collected in high amounts by local people.

In collaboration with the Community of Bardenas Reales, we are preparing a catalogue with the land snails species present in the Natural Park, its distributions ranges and their conservation status. Moreover, our interest is focused in the populations of those species collected for gastronomically proposes.

In this way, our aim is to apply capture-mark-recapture (CMR) models to the study of populations of Iberus alonensis within Bardenas Reales to obtain information about population changes by focusing on the individual processes of survival, growth and dispersal to establish conservation and management measures.
